Writing With the
Personal Touch
An excerpt from The Complete Guide to Writing Professionally
By Kathy Collard Miller
My interest in writing goes all the way back to my childhood. As an adult,
that dream of writing was put on a back burner because I really didn't
know how to make a writer's life come true. Then a traumatic experience
turned my life around.
I had been married 7 years to Larry and I was the mother of a two-year-old
daughter named Darcy and an infant named Mark. I couldn't handle life,
marriage, or mothering and I physically and emotionally abused my two-year-old
daughter.
But God was faithful. After showing me the underlying causes and solutions
for my problem. He awoke within me a desire to share my story after I
attended an adult education writing class.
I wrote a query letter to Moody magazine and they wanted to hear about
my story. After I wrote it, they purchased it. That article, which was
the first article I ever sold, has been reprinted 6 times. I've also rewritten
that story in other ways from different angles for five other articles.
In addition, those stories have been reprinted numerous times. Of the
120 articles I've sold, at least 35 have been personal experience stories,
either my own or someone else.
Obviously, personal experience stories are a good place to begin our
writing - and to continue it. You have most likely noticed how many magazines
publish them. I know that if you gathered up the magazines in your home,
you would find that a majority of them contain these kinds of stories.
A personal experience article tells yours or someone else's story. After
writing my own story, I went on to find other people who had good stories.
You can also find leads from newspaper articles, friends, and even celebrities.
The main goal of personal experience articles is to impact a reader's
thinking and feeling so that they learn something and have their life
changed as a result. For stories written from a Christian perspective,
the goal is to create a desire to grow closer to God. Usually these include
how God was a part of the story and through prayer or faith helped the
person to grow and change.
