HERE'S THE STORY Behind the Project...

Manners of the Heart Community Fund, a nonprofit organization leading the way into public schools to teach manners, respect and values and based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, announces the 'To My Friend' Project, an opportunity for children to reach out to those children displaced or affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Jill Rigby, the organization's director is asking elementary school children to fill a lunch sack with essential items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, pencils, erasers, stickers, glue sticks and crayons with a note of encouragement as well as a self-addressed, stamped stationary so the receiving child can write a 'Thank-You' note to send in return.

Rigby says, "The children of the storm are wounded and right now, they need a young friend to help them know that someone cares. Otherwise, we are going to see a generation of children so damaged they grow up to become adults who are bitter at the world."

If you are from the public schools, Jill suggests each letter express concern, care and friendship.

If you are from the community of faith, Jill suggests each letter contain Scripture and prayer.

Rigby shares, "One of the objectives of Manners of the Heart is to give children opportunities to experience how good it feels to serve others. We're building self-respect in our children, which is much more important than self-esteem. Self-respect comes from serving others, not self." She suggests, "This project is a rewarding activity for families, homeschoolers, public and private school classrooms, and Sunday School classes."

The participating children should be instructed they are helping a friend get ready for school. They should be told, "These bags are for kids who were in Hurricane Katrina and had to leave their homes and friends behind. Many of these kids have to go to a new school and because they've lost everything, they need pencils and supplies to help them get ready."

Rigby asks that each lunch bag include the suggested supplies, a child's letter of encouragement addressed to "To my friend," as well as the self-addressed stationary for the hoped-for thank-you note. Write 'boy' or 'girl.' on the outside of each bag. Each bag should be stapled shut to prevent spillage. Please do not include cash, candy, scissors or liquid goods.

Send the bags and/or monetary donations to:
